Clark Kilgard
It was Easter Sunday. I hadn’t seen Richard for about 6 months and he hadn’t seen me. His first words were: “You look twenty years younger!” I said: “That’s because I’m twenty pounds lighter.” He didn’t know that, unlike Ponce De Leon, I had found the “Fountain of Youth” right here in South Florida.
OK. You need to know that my fountain of youth ain’t no fountain. Instead, it is the effervescent Billy Beck the 3rd and his Personal Training and Performance Center. He invited me to his January seminar. Apparently, he invited 300 other people! And then he turned on the motivational jets. He only asked that we do something rather than nothing; something like show an interest, step into the stream, get our feet wet.
I already knew that I needed to do this. At age 57, I wasn’t aging well. Too much weight had brought on sleep apnea and osteoarthritis in both knees. I walked with a limp. I have a “bucket list” in my wallet with the goal “weigh less than 200 lbs” on it. I needed to go to the fountain and fill my bucket...or maybe empty it. Besides that, I am a spiritual leader and I need to set a good example. I can’t be saying: “Listen to me.” “Be like me.” and be so out of shape. It goes to credibility. So I did something. I wrote on a card that I was interested.
Soon after, I got a phone call from Loryn, a bubbly brunette from Billy Beck’s fountain. She said I should come into the center for a week for free and try the program. It was called the 7-Day Challenge. I discovered that Loryn, who looks and acts a good deal like my daughter, could get me to do tougher things than I would ever do on my own. When the week was over, I had lost seven pounds. I signed on. I also signed up for the 90 – Day challenge. I recognized that as another great motivational device to keep me on track.
Every late winter and spring, the Church has it’s own fitness program. We call it Lent. It is a time of fasting, discipline and self-improvement. It was natural for me to change my diet and my habits. But the BB3 program is not fasting. One eats every three hours. The metabolism speeds up. I discovered that I like food in general and that all I needed to do was eat the good stuff. I never felt like I was giving anything up, Lent or no Lent.
Back at the BB3 “fountain of youth”, I found a number of young trainers and a lot of other people like me who had made a commitment to health and wellness. It could be that those things make you friendly and personable, but I suspect that Billy has trained his staff in motivation, social skills, and customer service to keep the fountain flowing.
As the 90-Day challenge wore on, Loryn and I stepped up the pace, so that I was working out three times a week. I noticed that other folks did different things than I did and that she had designed my program just for me. Like I said, I know that I would not have worked as hard or stuck to my eating plans as well if it wasn’t for her supervision. On top of that, I know I probably would have injured myself somewhere along the way by doing things on my own.
I have had to put five extra holes in my belt. On Easter Sunday, I got out a great khaki tropical suit I hadn’t worn in years; maybe not twenty-years, but a few. I had just come from the fountain.
